In life, some days are filled with typical tasks. We get up, eat the same breakfast as always, go to work, eat lunch with the same people, go home, and read the same newspaper. These things make life feel comfortable, and these things are necessary. BUT, we grow the most when we experience new things with an open mind. We grow when we push ourselves and when we make & meet goals for ourselves. Today was one of those days. It was awesome. It was inspiring. It was SO MUCH FUN. Some of us participated in an intense drama class in the morning, and others in a printmaking class. Then we all participated in a Shadow Theater class. And to follow it all up, we had a poetry class this afternoon where we focused on.... nothing. That's right! A purposeful class about the idea of nothing! It has been such an amazing day, full of new ideas and new activities. Take a look! It is SO exciting when someone requests to learn something particular. I love being able to teach what people want to learn, and being asked specific questions means that we can help people meet their specific goals. Today, Ed wanted to learn how to draw people. I started out by asking him to list all of the parts of the body, and he drew his first person. He soon realized that people need to have two legs, and then was concerned that the legs on his person were too short. We talked about torsos and bellies, and how the other body parts connect onto it. We even talked about knee caps! Ed is very observant and wanted to create the very best person possible. Here is his progression:
Jon is creating a village protected by an exterior wall. We have been beyond lucky with some of our volunteers! This wonderful pair has creativity to the max, they are patient, and they bring great energy to TURN CCA! Their goal is to help our participants create their artistic vision--and you should see what we all came up with! So, so cool! |
